The origins of Junkanoo trace back to the 16th or 17th century, when enslaved West Africans were given a rare few days off after Christmas. They would celebrate by masquerading in elaborate, colorful costumes and dancing to the rhythmic beat of cowbells, goat-skin drums, and whistles, a tradition named after the "John Canoe" festival of their homeland. Today, the costumes have evolved from simple flour paste masks into stunning, intricate works of art, constructed from thousands of tiny pieces of crepe paper over handcrafted frames of cardboard and wire.
